Staffing Levels

Resisting management's attempts to cut staffing levels

Danger Zone

April's edition of LU’s news sheet against workplace violence, ‘Challenging News’, has re-issued golden rules for avoiding conflict at the gateline. This is "to take account of the fact that many of our people are new to working outside ticket offices. The gate-line has always been identified as...

Another Near Miss

On Tuesday morning, an elderly passenger dropped some personal stuff on the track on the westbound at Chancery Lane - and got down onto the track to retrieve it! Fortunately, some other passengers got him off the track in time to avert a nasty accident, but it was a potential disaster for the...

Breaking In

Once again, London Underground has left stations unstaffed, and once again there have been potentially-dire consequences.

On Friday evening, Chigwell station was left with no staff, and there was an attempted robbery of the ticket office. When staff from other stations responded to the alarm and...

Elderly, disabled passengers left stranded

A recent incident shows how LU's de-staffing of stations is putting vulnerable passengers in danger.

An elderly wheelchair user and her partner got off a train late at night at Epping. But with no staff on the station, they were unable to leave and were stuck on the platform. In the freezing cold...

Overcrowded

What happened in central London on Saturday 13th November? The Victoria and Jubilee Lines were closed, the Lord Mayor's Show, a rugby game at Twickenham, Xmas shopping.....nothing the Tube should not be able to cope with.

But on Saturday afternoon Embankment, Tottenham Court Road, Picadilly Circus...

Up For The Cup!

Last month, London Underground had some very important visitors, as FIFA officials travelled around the Jubilee line inspecting the facilities as they assessed London’s bid for the 2018 World Cup.

Funnily enough, though, normal levels of station staffing were not adequate for our visitors, as SRT...

The Road to Damascus

On a Monday in late July, St. Paul's station was left with duties uncovered due to guess what? Management's deliberate running-down of staffing levels in preparation for job cuts.

Mid-afternoon, there was just one SS, one SAMF and one CSA on duty, all running round like headless chickens trying to...

Stations Closed, Trains Still Running

LU is taking greater and greater risks with its de-staffing of stations. Last Thursday night (8 July), Picc line trains were running late and several stations north of King's Cross (Caledonian Road, Holloway Road, Finsbury Park, Arsenal and Manor House) were either closed or running with fewer than...

Stations Slaughtered: and there's more ...

Out on the east end of the District Line, we are being slaughtered with understaffing too.

In the peak, one CSA can not queue-bust, deal with VIPs and school parties at the same time. The SS can not always assist on the gateline due to constant changes in PAs, meal break coverage etc.

'Babysitting...

Stations Slaughtered: more reports ...

After our post yesterday, we have received more reports about stations being slaughtered by lack of coverage:

  • In the middle of the morning peak at Euston, one member of staff had to cover both Way In and Way Out gates alone because other duties were not covered.
  • Chaos ensued at Loughton on Saturday...
