About 400 attended a "Unite the Clans" (UtC) rally at Glasgow Green on 25 July; however over a thousand were at the SUTR-organised counter-protest.
In recent weeks UtC has been holding protests in various housing schemes in Glasgow (and elsewhere in Scotland), presenting themselves as standing up for women and children against (supposed) paedophiles living in the schemes. This overlaps with the UtC campaign against asylum-seekers, who are supposedly the main threat to women and children.
Unfortunately, they have had some success in mobilising some locals for their protests. Their rally on 25 July seems to have been a kind of culmination of those local protests.
Originally they had wanted to stage a demonstration or a rally at the usual venue of the Buchanan Steps. Police refused to allow it to go ahead, because, they said, of the Commonwealth Games and stretched police resources. They ended up having their rally in one corner of Glasgow Green, with the SUTR counter-protest on the other side of the railings.
