Anti-Trump day in USA

billionaires

Tuesday 20 January is another day of action in the USA against Trump, with a call for people to walk out of work or school at 2pm.

Sadly, no union is promoting this call. It comes from NGO and community grouips.

Unions have joined previous days of action, if only, so far, with small contingents. The United Auto Workers (UAW) has called for unions to work together for a general strike... but only in May 2028.

Meanwhile, Trump is:

• Directing ICE thugs’ terror on the streets of Minneapolis and other cities

• Withdrawing the USA even from international frameworks to assess ecological threats (let alone to mend them)

• Seizing Venezuela’s oil and saying he will “run” the country

• Beating war drums over Greenland

• Trying to push out US Federal Reserve (central bank) chief Jay Powell.

Solidarity has no brief for Powell, or for the idea that central banks should be outside elected control.

But, equally, Trump’s arbitrary autocracy is not made democratic by his 49.8% vote on 5 November 2024. Good democracy requires control over the executive by elected assemblies; right of recall of representatives; and officials on workers’ wages, not on Trump’s give-me-a-plane rake-offs.
