In the late seventies and eighties, Ollie Maurer, a former Sheffield University student who re-trained as a plumber, was a supporter of Socialist Organiser (a forerunner of the AWL). A man of boundless energy and commitment, he played a key role in helping Socialist Organiser establish a presence in the Sheffield Labour Party and contributed in many ways to the work of the Socialist Organiser branch. In later years he moved to Manchester where he was, again, a tireless militant and organiser within NATFHE (National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education) and later in the UCU.
He possessed a wonderful sense of humour. He was a great lover of music and a keen footballer who refused to “hang up” his boots and continued playing into old age, at a time when most of struggle to get to the nearest pub. He will be sorely missed
