No king in the USA! Yes, and no king in Britain, either!
The monarchy in Britain is not the centre of executive power, like Trump in the USA. But it is a bastion of unelected, unaccountable, undemocratic privilege.
Starmer has used the monarchy as a channel in his squalid attempts to schmooze Trump. He surely thought that Trump would feel good about a ceremonial dinner with an actual signed-and-sealed king. Maybe the common factor of being burned by the Epstein scandal (shared also Starmer’s now-disgraced ambassador to the USA, Peter Mandelson) would help to bond the overlords.
A backstop, constitutional-last-resort monarchy is undemocratic, too. The authority of Britain’s monarchy was used in 1975 by the Governor-General of Australia to make a legal coup, sacking the elected (mildly reformist) Labor government to replace it by Tories.
No king in Britain, either!
