Sheffield University win on trans rights

ID card

At the University of Sheffield, there has been a win for trans rights on Student IDs. According to Sophie Layton, the Trans+ Representative Councillor on the Students’ Union Council, trans students can now get new UCards from the Student Services information desk with their chosen name on it instantly, without a legal name change, without any documentation, proof of identity or other information, and free of charge.

This win came after Trans Rights policy was passed at the Student Union in response to the April Supreme Court ruling. This shows that proactive campaigning by activists and the Student Union can quickly generate results for trans students.

Campaigning will need to increase next academic year. Campaigns should draw university workers and their unions into this struggle.
