AWL conference 2024

placards

The Alliance for Workers’ Liberty has begun discussing the motions and reports which will be voted on at our conference on 27-28 April.

The conference will assess left-wing responses to recent changes in the capitalist world order, the trends towards a world of rival blocs, shifts to the right in many countries and war and conflict especially in Ukraine and Israel-Palestine.

We will be debating the forthcoming US election, where all of us see the prospect of a second Trump term of office as a mortal threat. However while some of us analyse Trump and the movement around him as quasi or incipiently fascist, others see this as a far-right figure consistent with similar leaders and parties around the world. Some of us conclude socialists should call for a vote for Democratic Party nominee for President, Joe Biden, as a lesser evil, while denouncing his capitalist policies and maximising effort to create new and socialist alternatives with urgency. Others disagree, not recommending any vote for President, arguing the sole focus should be on a project for independent working-class politics as way to combat the threat.

A motion on ecology codifies policies we have developed over the last ten years.
We will also be discussing the work we do in the UK – in the Labour Party, in the trade unions, in our student unions — and assessing how well we do at promoting our ideas through our literature and public meetings. Specific reports will highlight practical plans for campaigning around solidarity with workers and dissidents against the Chinese government, our feminist work and on the environment. The conference will also elect our National Committee.
