NHS pay: getting the vote out

9 June day of action

The re-ballot for industrial action on pay in the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) runs up to 23 June. The last day to order a replacement ballot is 11 June, which makes this week vital in getting the vote out. As it is an aggregated ballot, every vote will make a difference in getting past the turnount threshold.

A day of action for #VoteforStrike has been organised by NHS Workers Say No for Friday 9 June.

NHS bosses' failure to deliver the paltry imposed award into many pay packets this month, and the fact that bank staff will not receive the one-off, may boost the response in the ballot.

The campaign to get the vote out must include the case for escalated action, and unity with the other striking health unions, Unite and the BMA to bring confidence that further industrial action can win further concessions. Unite struck again on 1 June at Guys and St Thomas’s in London, and on 2 June in Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and has mandates in other ambulance and hospital trusts. Junior doctors in the BMA plan to strike again between 14 and 17 June.

Sharp escalation with the largest number of NHS workers striking at the same time, with emergency cover under local workers' control, is the best way to win the dispute. §
