A demonstration in Montreal called by La Coalition large de l’Association pour une Solidarité Syndicale Étudiante (CLASS) against rising tuition fees ended in disaster after it was attacked by the police.

The demonstration was the latest in a wave of walkouts and occupations involving tens of thousands of students in Quebec, it was also the second time in a fortnight that a student demonstration in Quebec has been violently repressed by the police.

An ASSÉ member, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, said in an interview with 98.5 FM Montréal “It was really peaceful, except for when we were at Loto-Québec when the police set off flash-bombs. We were peacefully blocking the CREPUQ building and the police decided to clear up Sherbrooke St. using indescribable violence.”

Francis Grenier, a student at CEGEP St. Jerome, lost his right eye after he was shot point blank in the face with a stun grenade by the police. Three other students were also injured and five were arrested in a clash with police outside of Loto-Quebec headquarters, home to the Conference of Chancellors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ).

CLASS is a broad student union set up by ASSÉ and represents around 80,000 students across Canada.
