Ian Row 1945 - 2004

Submitted by Janine on 22 April, 2004 - 11:45

Ian Row was a committed fighter for working-class people in Hackney. His sudden death from cancer of the oesophagus has shocked and saddened all those that knew him.
Aside from his trade union activity (as a GMB shop steward whilst working for Thames Water in the Tottenham / Walthamstow area and a PCS rep in the Benefits Agency in Hackney), Ian was an active member of the Hackney Tenants' and Residents' Federation since its formation, and was Secretary of the Trelawney Estate Tenants' and Residents' Association.

Ian was a Labour Councillor between 1986 - 1990 and was not afraid to take a stand both against cuts and against the poll tax. Ian was expelled from the Hackney Labour Group for non-payment of his poll tax despite the mass non-payment campaign which ended in victory.

Those who knew Ian remember him for his vast knowledge of virtually everything! There was little that Ian was not well read on, and his flat contained a vast library of books ranging from classic literature to politics, history and science. This thirst for knowledge combined with refusal to compromise on his deeply-held convictions was the basis for his strong socialist beliefs.

The memorial service starts at 4pm on Tuesday 4th May at the East London Cemetary, Plaistow. All are welcome to attend. Flowers can be sent c/o Co-operative Funeral Service, 191a Mare Street, Hackney E8 3QE. Alternatively donations can be made to cancer research. For any further details phone Tim Row 07940 856650.
