Sign to Stop Ticket Office Closures

Click here to sign the petition I have set up on the 10 Downing Street website, objecting to Tube ticket office closures.

And just to reassure you that I don't actually think that a petition alone will stop these closures, here is a set of campaign proposals that I and a couple of other activists are circulating in the RMT:

TICKET OFFICE JOB CUTS - PROPOSALS FOR ACTION
Janine Booth (Bank group rep), Alex Parkinson (Finsbury Park group rep), Rick Grogan (SS Upminster Bridge)

LUL’s announcement is a massive attack on our members which we must resist. It will cause: loss of jobs; displacement of staff, including many who have only recently been displaced; loss of line of promotion for CSAs; increased workload and grief for gateline staff; loss of customer service; more assaults. We have to organise against this urgently, and avoid repeating mistakes made in previous campaigns such as the 35-hour week.

WHAT R.M.T. SHOULD DO

Organising among station staff

· Every branch to discuss this issue at the next meeting: functional reps and the new Council of Executives rep (where possible) to attend.

· Reps and activists to go round the workplaces with leaflets talking (and listening) to members.

· Reps and branches to arrange local meetings near stations, with support from the region and functional council.

· Monthly Station Grades meetings to co-ordinate campaigning; receive reports from functional reps; form dispute committee at the appropriate time. We should try to get reps/activists from every group to attend. Head office and/or the region should fully resource the Station Grades Committee to produce publicity, hold meetings etc.

· Approach the TSSA for a joint campaign, but don’t let their unwillingness to take action hold us back.

Information

· The region to produce a leaflet outlining the issues and arguments, and explaining what members can do about it.

· Functional reps to find out as soon as possible the detail of the closure plans, and circulate this information as it becomes available.

· Functional reps to send out a weekly email update on developments and campaign plans, and fortnightly printed updates, throughout this campaign.

Other grades

· The region to produce leaflets aimed at drivers, service control, RCIs, admin etc explaining why they should oppose these cuts and urging solidarity with station staff.

· A series of petitions - ‘Drivers Against Ticket Office Closures’ etc - for each grade.

Public campaign

· Launch an online petition and a printed petition.

· Produce a leaflet for the public as soon as possible; organise leafleting/petitioning sessions outside stations.

· Produce protest stickers.

· Send out press releases; get members to write to their local newspaper etc.

· Set up a section of the RMT website, or a separate website, to promote the campaign.

· Hold protests at eg. company council meetings, the Mayor’s office etc.

Industrial action

· We will need industrial action to defeat this attack. We need to be ready to do this BEFORE the first ticket office closes, which could be as soon as September or even earlier.
