For a couple of years there was a united left slate for the NUS executive involving the Campaign for Free Education (including AWL) and the SWP. Then there was one involving CFE, SWP and Student Broad Left/Socialist Action.

That unity broken down primarily because of major political differences on the left. For instance, at the 2005 NUS conference, there were as many differences, there were as many clashes between different sections of the "left" as between left and right. Eg, when right-wing Muslim students walked out in protest at the speech of an Iraqi socialist, Socialist Action and the SWP joined them.

This year neither the SWP or Socialist Action has showed any interest in unity.

Besides, the ENS slate is a sort of united slate. Two of its members are in the AWL, one is a socialist from the Young Greens, the other three are independent left-wingers of various sorts. Everyone very active in ENS is a lefie of some description and almost everyone is an anti-capitalist, but within that framework there is wide variation.
