CWU condemns Labour's expulsion of RMT

This motion on the RMT's expulsion from the Labour Party was passed at the Communication Workers' Union National Executive on 29 January 2004. "This Executive deplores, condemns and regrets the backward step for the labour movement of the decision of the Labour Party to expel the RMT without giving them an opportunity to put their case against expulsion to the NEC of the Labour Party and notes that this will not become effective until after the RMT Conference on 6th February. We therefore call on the Labour Party to instigate urgent talks with the RMT, with a view to finding a mutually...

CWU Broad Left

By CWU members The Annual General Meeting on 10 January of the Communications Workers Union Broad Left (CWU BL) had several heated debates around the accountability of union National Executive Council (NEC) members who have been supported by the Broad Left to the activists of the BL and to the wider membership. The principle that the policies of BL-supported NEC members should be subject to the endorsement of the BL AGM was lost on a close vote. We won two other votes. The first asserted the right of the AGM to demand the reinstatement of BL NEC members to the Head Office caucus. Maria Exall...

Reinstate Paul Turnbull!

By Stan Crooke The Communication Workers' Union (CWU) is to ballot CWU members in Cambridge (and members in any other offices who also wish to be balloted) on industrial action if local CWU rep Paul Turnbull is not re-instated. It has agreed to pay Paul the equivalent of his wages while campaigning for his reinstatement, and it is calling on trade unionists to sign a statement in support of reinstatement. The January meeting of Cambridge Trades Council agreed to make campaigning for Paul's reinstatement a priority. Paul was sacked at Christmas, on alleged grounds dating back the unofficial...

Communication Workers Union Broad Left AGM - Consensus or democracy?

By Maria Exall , CWU National Executive, personal capacity The Communication Workers Broad Left meets for its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 10 January. Just before Xmas the union received a letter from BT asking us to not submit a pay claim this year. This really is an indication of how far along the "Company Union" route we have gone. BT plans to continue major job cuts, continue outsourcing to India, and press forward with the performance based pay agenda. The Engineering Executive, led by the Broad Left (BL), has failed to capitalise on the resistance to the productivity bonus scheme in...

Postal offer on pay and Major Change - Vote no to this shameful deal

By a London postal worker After talks at the arbitration service ACAS, the postal workers' union, the CWU, have finally cut a deal with management on pay and "Major Change". Members were kept in the dark about this for weeks. Now we can see why… it's a complete sell-out! What have our main negotiator Dave Ward and his team managed to achieve? The so-called £26 per week increase we get in return for implementing "Major Change" and achieving Royal Mail targets includes up to £5 from existing bonuses and supplements. The delivery targets are based on "the unit manager's assessment of a 3.5 hour...

CWU leaders do a deal behind the scenes?

According to the Guardian of 13 December 2003, the leaders of the post and telecom union CWU have agreed a deal with Royal Mail. They will reveal it to the union's executive some time this week (15-19 December) and ballot union members on it in the New Year. The Guardian's report reads: David Gow Saturday December 13, 2003 The Guardian Royal Mail yesterday won complete backing for its crucial recovery plan from the main postal workers' union, the CWU - and angered another with plans for up to 3,000 redundancies among managers. The company and the CWU are understood to have reached an agreement...

One-third of UK Post Offices to close - 8 in Hackney?

Eight Hackney post offices face closure because "they do not make enough profit". And there was us thinking that post offices were supposed to be a public service, not simply a source of profit! Local residents will also be surprised to learn that the Post Office believes that there are "too many post offices and not enough people". The queues tell a different story! Apparently this is part of a national policy of closures which the Post Office has dubbed 'Network Re-invention' (where do they get these terms from?!). Although Hackney may be especially hard-hit (no change there), people all...

FBU ranks must organise

FBU ranks must organise By Nick Holden Fire Brigades Union members have voted to accept the staging of the second phase of their pay rise, with a three to one majority. The ballot had a 56% turn-out, low by the FBU's standards, and was a major reversal since twelve months ago, when there was a nine to one majority for strike action to win a £30,000 salary for all fire fighters. The latest vote not only settles the pay campaign for £25,000 at the end of two years, but also accepts a number of cuts and attacks on working conditions dressed up by management - and sometimes the FBU negotiators -...
