Dear Mr Mitchell

I am not a resident of your constituency. However I am, like you, a campaigner in defence of council housing. It is for this reason that I am writing to you to urge you to nominate John McDonnell in the election for Labour leader.

I am sure that, like me, you would like to see the issue of council housing discussed and debated as part of the leadership campaign. It would be a great opportunity to air the arguments and to show both labour movement activists and the wider public that there are many of us who believe strongly in council housing and are willing to defend it.

The only way to ensure that happens is to ensure that John McDonnell is able to stand as a candidate. Without John's candidature, there will be not an election but a coronation. Labour will get a leader who rejects the party's own policy of support for the Fourth Option and worse, will get such a leader without party members and trade unionists having the chance to consider an alternative.

If, however, John is able to stand, then council tenants - and the many other working-class people who have been turning away from Labour - may see some reason to take an interest in Labour again. Your nomination could be crucial to ensuring that this happens.

Thank you

Janine Booth
