Venezuela: stop anti-union repression!

Posted in Olivier_Rubens's blog on ,

The following statement has been issued by several trade union leaders and fighters for workers' rights in Venezuela. The case is about an attack by thugs, composed of people linked to the PSUV apparatus, on a workers' assembly in a plant of the state mining firm Ferrominera. The attack killed one and injured two workers. The aim was to silence the militant and independent wing of the union (Sintraferrominera) led by Ruben Gonzalez. Gonzalez is facing a new wave of judicial prosecution after a halt resulting from the success of the defense mobilisation in Venezuela. So it is important that socialists and trade-unionists around the world publicise this deadly attack against workers' rights to organise and to fight without the control or the threat of state-apparatus.

The statement has been translated into French by the web site La Bataille Socialiste: see here.

The original statement is available on the venezuelian site La Classe: see here.

Venezuela – against armed gangs, murders and the criminalisation of struggle! Stop the persecution of Rubén González

Venezuela has seen a new display of impunity from the Chavez government, supported by the judiciary. The second Bolivarian State tribunal has set free Hector Maico, treasurer of Sintraferrominera and member of the PSUV. This man had been arrested a few minutes after an armed attack on workers who took part in a workplace meeting to elect a trade union electoral commission. It is public knowledge that this attack resulted in the death of Renny Rojas and wounding of Manuel Quilarque, both of them workers in Ferrominera. Augustin Lezama was also wounded.

Despite obvious proof and witness statements from several workers who were targeted in the attack, the tribunal rejected the murder charge and only considered the charges of possession of illegal arms and causing minor injury.

At the same time, State governor Francisco Rangel and Alfredo Spooner, regional secretary of PSUV trade union reps, and the president of the Ferrominera company Radwan Sabbagh, started a campaign of persecution against Ruben Gonzalez, the general secretary of the Sintraferrominera trade union. They tried to paint him as responsible for the attack. As is known, Gonzalez had been imprisoned for 17 months, in disregard of his rights, for nothing more than having led a strike to demand that the company simply respect its own contractual obligations.

We, the under-signed trade unionists and figures in Venezuela and around the world, demand of the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, that he cease his policy of the criminalisation of struggles, the violation of trade union autonomy, the intimidation of journalists who are acting on the democratic right to inform society, and put a halt to the impunity with which armed gangs affiliated with the government to act against workers and trade union leaders who are fighting for their rights.

We demand an inquest which is free of the least political pressure; the end of judicial attacks against Ruben Gonzalez and the leadership of the Sintraferrominera union, and against all those in the country who are supporting workers’ rights and promoting trade union autonomy.

I've translated the petition text into English. The original French petition text is below:
