Senior Conductors on EMR are balloting for industrial action to protect their grade. This comes after ASLEF signed off on a pay deal that accepts any and all future tech. By implication this means drivers could take control of the doors away from guards! The company offered reassurance that they have no plans to introduce this currently but have said nothing about future stock.
You've got to wonder why management made this a part of the deal in the first place and didn't negotiate with RMT to allay their fears if they weren't planning something. And even if these drivers didn't see how such a deal could affect them in the future; driverless trains anyone; they could have easily demanded, in the here and now, that the company exclude door control from the future tech aspect of the deal. As it is they've shown a mercenary disregard for the jobs of the people they work with every day and all for the sake of a few extra quid.
