RMT and Unite members working for Hitachi Rail on the LNER contract have been on strike since Saturday 27 January, with action due to conclude on 1 February.

Workers are striking to win an improved pay offer, which their employer has refused to offer, despite making over £100m in profit and paying out £260,179,000 in dividends.

Unite members working for Hitachi Rail on the GWR contract, meanwhile, have settled their pay dispute, accepting a 6% increase, plus a £1,250 lump sum payment, for 2023-4, and a further 5.2% increase for 2024-5.

Whatever one thinks of the GWR deal, and whether more could have been won, it's baffling that the same employer is refusing to offer consistent terms across different contracts.

Picket lines have been mounted at maintenance depots in Craigentinny, Edinburgh; Bounds Green, North London; and Doncaster, South Yorkshire.
