Freight operator DB Cargo has announced that it intends to cut 95 drivers' jobs.
Although it plans to do this by scrapping vacant posts rather than by making any drivers redundant, it is still a very bad move.
Firstly, if it doesn't need these jobs right now, then it could keep the same number of jobs but reduce the working week (without cutting pay), so that more people would have jobs and those people would have a better work-life balance.
And secondly, there needs to be a massive shift of freight from rail to road in order to reduce carbon emissions and save the planet (and reduce road congestion and deaths). We want to see the rail freight sector expanding not contracting.
Off The Rails is rather alarmed not to have heard a squeak from ASLEF about this. Perhaps the Society thinks that job cuts don't matter if no current drivers will lose their jobs. But they do. And it's time for a fightback against this.
