Lonely At The Top

Anyone wondering what the purpose is of LUL's Black Asian and Minority Ethnic Network can find an answer in the latest On The Move - which appears to suggest that it's to help a small number of black people get into senior management jobs!

Now, Tubeworker is in favour of equal opportunities and representation at all levels of the company, but we can think of many more burning issues for ethnic minority staff, for example ... Racist assaults and abuse at work, the appalling pay and conditions of cleaners, the right to time off for cultural celebrations, the employer's mistreatment of staff who fall ill while visiting family abroad, ...

These are all very good reasons for ethnic minority staff to get organised to fight for their rights, but we'd suggest you will be more effective doing that through your union than through management's forums.

And while it is a scandal that black workers are concentrated in low-paid grades, the answer is not to get a few into senior management posts, but to abolish the notion of 'low-paid grades' by giving those grades a whopping pay rise!
