"Carry on putting.. Property is inviolate" says Chavez

A couple of days ago I read a heart-warming story about how the Mayor of Caracas was going to expropriate several golf courses overlooking the poorer parts of the city and use the land to build decent housing for slum dwellers.

This is not merely elementary social justice. Golf must be the most stupid game ever invented. An excuse for middle-aged men (largely) to pretend to take some exercise while doing deals and 'networking'.

So I was disappointed to read today's Guardian letters page and read this from the 'Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela':

"President Chavez's government has dissociated itself from the expropriation of golf courses by the Caracas Mayor. In a communique of August 30 it is stated: 'Under no circumstances will the government accept the right of property to be made vulnerable. The national government must guarantee juridical security for all citizens with no discrimination whatsoever.'"

So the golfers of Caracas - and the others with property - can sleep soundly at night.
