AWL

Today one class, the working class, lives by selling its labour power to another, the capitalist class which owns the means of production. Society is shaped by the capitalists' relentless drive to increase their wealth. Capitalism causes poverty, unemployment, the blighting of lives by overwork, imperialism, the destruction of the environment and much else.

Against the accumulated wealth and power of the capitalists, the working class has one weapon: solidarity.

The Alliance for Workers' Liberty aims to build solidarity through struggle so that the working class can overthrow capitalism. We want socialist revolution: collective ownership of industry and services, workers' control and a democracy much fuller than the present, with elected representatives recallable at any time and an end to bureaucrats' and managers' privileges.

We fight for the labour movement to break with "social partnership" and assert working-class interests militantly against the bosses.

Our priority is to work in the workplaces and trade unions, supporting workers' struggles, producing workplace bulletins, helping organise rank-and-file groups.

We stand for:

• Independent working-class representation in politics.
• A workers' government, based on and accountable to the labour movement.
• A workers' charter of trade union rights - to organise, to strike, to picket effectively, and to take solidarity action.
• Taxation of the rich to fund decent public services, homes, education and jobs for all.
• A workers' movement that fights all forms of oppression. Full equality for women and social provision to free women from the burden of housework. Free abortion on request. Full equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people. Black and white workers' unity against racism.
• Open borders.
• Global solidarity against global capital - workers everywhere have more in common with each other than with their capitalist or Stalinist rulers.
• Democracy at every level of society from the smallest workplace or community to global social organisation.
• Working-class solidarity in international politics: equal rights for all nations, against imperialists and predators big and small.
• Maximum left unity in action, and openness in debate!

Why we want £35,000

Workers’ Liberty stands for a society where the crises, exploitation and inequality of capitalism are replaced by collective ownership and sustainable planning for people’s needs — socialism. In order for Workers’ Liberty to educate, agitate and organise to change the world, we need to expand our sources of funds. We will at some point have to move office. Our previous fundraising to help us do this was hit first by the pandemic, then the cost of living crisis and a lack of central staff resources to do the work. We have recruited to our staff since then, but with that comes increased costs...

Why I joined AWL

My first experience in activism was the student rent strikes of 2020-21, which saw a burst of student radical student organisation against mistreatment by university management. As quickly as that movement came onto the scene, it collapsed under the pressures of organising under Covid and of petty factionalism. Some of that came from the behaviour of the local Marxsoc, who abandoned the occupation of the Arts Tower before it had even begun. That left me with a bad impression of “Marxist” politics. I encountered Workers’ Liberty through Sheffield Solidarity Group and participated in supporting...

Workers' Liberty union fractions discuss

Workers’ Liberty’s industrial fractions — networks of our members working in a particular industry or sector to coordinate our activity there — held a joint meeting on Sunday 8 January. The meeting reviewed the ongoing strike wave, discussed campaigning against threatened anti-strike laws, and heard reports on labour movement international solidarity work with workers’ and democratic struggles in Iran, Ukraine, and China (including Hong Kong and East Turkestan/Xinjiang). Workers’ Liberty trade unionists reporting from many sectors argued for escalation and intensification of action, plus...

We are aiming to raise £35,000 by Ideas for Freedom in July 2023. We have no big money backers. We rely on contributions from workers and students like you! So please consider donating one of the many ways on this page to help our crucial work.

Women's Fightback: "All the Rage" sets agenda for activities

Events prioritisng socialist feminism have been lacking on the British left in recent years, but the discussion at the All The Rage conference organised by Workers’ Liberty in London on 26 November highlighted the central role of women in class-struggle movements, and the global relevance of the issues. Around the world women are leading struggles for workers’ rights, and for freedom against repressive governments. Sessions featured women speakers from Iran, India, the US, Poland, and Ukraine. The direct communication with activists based in those countries during the event gave a real sense...

Socialist summer camp 2022

The annual Workers’ Liberty socialist summer camp took place on 25-28 August 2022. It was the twelfth year in a row (minus 2020, due to Covid-19 restrictions). For the second time we were near Haslemere, in a large campsite with quality shower and cooking facilities, accessible for all ages and with childcare available throughout. With excellent weather all weekend, this was ideal for comrades to get together, discuss politics and have fun. Structured political discussions were varied, ranging from analyses of the far-right to artificial intelligence and sentience, and from capitalism and...

Ideas for Freedom 2022

Workers’ Liberty held its annual festival of socialist discussion from 30 June to 3 July, with a walking tour through the radical-history sites of Clerkenwell (Thursday 30 June), a showing of The Young Karl Marx (Friday 1 July), and two days of debates and talks at Camden School for Girls over the weekend. It was good to get back to a mainly in-person event this year, although there was limited online access over the weekend, including for a particular highlight on Saturday, a session on workers’ solidarity with Ukraine, with speakers from Ukrainian socialist organisation Sotsialnyi Rukh...

Workers' solidarity against Putin

The major Russian military offensive in Eastern Ukraine continues, as do Russian advances there, despite Ukrainian counterattacks and stubborn resistance. The grinding horror of this war may rumble on for many months or even years as Russian President Vladimir Putin pursues his war aim of subordinating Ukraine to Russian political power. Putin aims to overrun Eastern Ukraine. If he wins in the East Putin will then have the option of continuing to take territory in Ukraine’s south, perhaps looking to annex the whole coast. Or Russia might again attempt to conquer Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. Many...
