A 24-hour general strike of Greek workers has been called for Tuesday 7 February by the GSEE (private sector) and ADEDY (public sector) unions in response to the three-party coalition government’s agreement to make yet further cuts as demanded by the EU/ ECB/ IMF Troika as conditions for the second bailout fund and “private sector involvement” (PSI) in reorganising Greece’s debt.

More than a dozen Greek trade unionists face prison on Tuesday. JOIN OUR PROTEST IN SOLIDARITY!

Facebook event here

On Thursday 24 November 2011, the Greek police arrested Nikos Photopoulos, President of the power workers' union GENOP/DEI, along with more than a dozen of his fellow trade unionists. They will appear in court on Tuesday 10 January 2012 to face charges that could see them jailed for up to five years.

They were protesting against part of the Greek austerity measures - the cutting off of power to people unable to pay a new property tax, levied regardless of income or wealth and added to all electricity bills. The new tax is just the most recent d'austerity' action by the Greek government. The abolition of the national minimum wage and the lowering of employer-paid taxes are next.

AWL London forum. Greece: can the working class take power? Greek socialist speaks in London

Date:
17 November, 2011 - 19:30
Location:

Calthorpe Arms, 252 Grays Inn Road, London WC1X 8JR

Description:

As Greece's bourgeois parties prepare to form a national unity government, the country is being rocked by huge working-class struggles. As more and more workers mobilise and the popularity of the political mainstream plummets, is there a revolutionary alternative on the cards? In the absence of a strong revolutionary party, can the Greek working class take power?

Unless the Greek government pushes through the EU-sponsored cuts package, Greece cannot stay in the Eurozone. So should we advocate Greek withdrawal? Are we in favour of the break up of the EU?

What impact will the Greek struggles have on our fightback against cuts and what can we do to help our comrades in Greece?

Speakers:
Greek socialist activist Theodora Polenta
Martin Thomas

AWL London forum: Greece - is workers' power on the agenda?

Date:
20 May, 2010 - 21:30 - 23:00
Location:

Lucas Arms, 245a Grays Inn Road, London WC1X 8QZ (5 mins walk from King's Cross station)

Description:

Faced with a massive financial crisis, Greece's Labour-equivalent PASOK government responded by attempting to force through savage cuts and austerity measures aimed to make the working class pay for the capitalist crisis. Greek workers have responded with massive general strikes, accompanied by huge social upheaval on the streets.

How can we support Greece's workers? What are the economics behind the crisis? And is workers’ power a real possibility?

Martin Thomas will speak for the AWL and Greek Marxist economist Costas Lapavitsas has also been invited.
