Libya

Gaddafi defeated, but where next? Were we right about Libya? Sheffield AWL meeting

Date:
19 September, 2011 - 21:30 - 23:00
Location:

University Arms pub, Brookhill Roundabout, Sheffield

Description:

A Workers' Liberty Sheffield meeting at the University Arms, Sheffield. Martyn Hudson from Workers' Liberty will be analysing what socialists should say about Libya, and what solidarity we can offer the Libyans. Come and discuss our position on Libya, ask questions and debate the way forward for democracy in Libya. Is there now more space for a labour movement to develop? What are the tasks for socialists now Gaddafi has fallen?

Libya: Marxists, 'humanitarian intervention' and imperialism

Date:
30 March, 2011 - 21:30 - 23:30
Location:

The Lucas Arms, 245a Grays Inn Road, Kings Cross, London

Description:

The Western military intervention in Libya poses complex questions for socialists. Should we really oppose limited military action to aid the rebellion against Qaddafi (if that's what this is)? Or is such opposition the only way to remain principled opponents of US, UK etc militarism and imperialism? If the US, UK, NATO have not changed their spots - and of course they haven't - is "No intervention" the only thing we can say?

Beyond that, is 'humanitarian intervention' just old-style colonial imperialism under a new guise? What do 'imperialism' and 'anti-imperialism' mean in today's world?

A discussion led by Workers' Liberty's Clive Bradley. All welcome.

Libyans' new struggle

Two weeks after the death of Qaddafi and the wholesale rout of the last remnants of pro-regime fighters in Sirte there are major debates in Libya about the post-war resolution and how Libyan civil society can implement a new policy and practice on human rights.

It is good that Qaddafi's gone!

On Sunday 6 November we got a small down-payment towards the debate on Libya between AWL and the Socialist Party which we have been demanding, and the SP has been evading, since SP leader Peter Taaffe put his pen to work on the first of two long (and inaccurate!) polemics against us on the subject, back in April.
