Learning from solidarity: the miners' strike 1984-5

"Support groups are beginning to assume the status of one of the positive lessons of the 1984-85 strike in much the same way that mass picketing was seen as the lesson of the 1972 strike". Paul Mackney The great miners' strike of 1984-85 was a historic defeat for the British working class - a defeat that continues to haunt and enervate our movement to this day. But it was not simply a negative experience. Many valuable lessons were learned by the 150,000 miners out on strike for over a year and by the tens of thousands of working class people who actively supported them. The support committees...

Scottish unions join up

The Scottish TUC conference unanimously voted to affiliate to the No Sweat campaign and establish links with the FNPBI in Indonesia. The motion was moved by Edinburgh TUC and seconded by Jim Swan from West Lothian TUC. It should now be easier to help trade unions and trade councils in Scotland to organise against the use of sweatshop labour, both here and internationally. Thanks also to delegates at NUT conference, held last week in Harrogate, for raising £160 towards No Sweat's work.

Victimised for anti-racist report

By Janine Booth, President, Hackney Trades Union Council On Friday 25 April Hackney Council began its disciplinary hearing against UNISON Equalities Officer John Page. John is accused of "gross misconduct" for allegedly drafting a report which damns the Council's inaction against racism. UNISON Joint Branch Secretary Brian Debus is charged with the lesser offence of "misconduct" for his alleged role in producing the report. The extraordinary thing is that the Council states that no part of its case against John is that the report is untrue! It seems that it does not matter to them whether...
