The sound of African drums reverberated across Whitehall to Downing Street on Wednesday 16 July accompanied by calls for David Cameron to make a public statement and speak out against homophobia in Commonwealth countries ahead of the Games in Glasgow.

A protest organised by the African LGBTi Out and Proud Diamond Group, and supported by RMT union, Peter Tatchell Foundation, and Rainbow Across Borders, highlighted the fact that in 42 of the 53 Commonwealth countries it remains illegal to be LGBT.  Human rights campaigners are demanding that the British Government uses the Commonwealth Games to tackle the issue and eradicate the homophobic legacy of British colonialism.

Edwin Sesange, coordinator of the Out and Proud Diamond Group said: "Far from moving towards equality, we have seen many Commonwealth countries witch-hunt their LGBTI citizens and even tougher anti-gay laws have recently been legislated in countries like Uganda, Brunei and Nigeria."
