DVLA workers being month of action

Workers at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) kicked off a month of action with a walkout on Friday 1 June, as they attempt to resist the closure of 39 DVLA offices.

Staff at the DVLA’s Swansea headquarters, and driving examiners across the country, will strike again on Friday 8 June. Over 1,000 jobs are threatened by the proposed closures.

A statement from the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) said: “As well as putting jobs at risk, the DVLA closures would wipe out the high quality face-to-face services these offices provide to the public and motor traders, whose often complex enquiries could not be handled by telephone or online.

“The cuts to offices and jobs would also be a further blow to local economies and retail areas already struggling as a result of high unemployment and wage cuts.”
