The Unite union has decided on a timetable for the election to choose its first general secretary.

Candidates will have from 1 July to 31 August to nominate themselves. Ballot papers will be sent out from October, and the ballot will run to the end of the month.

Though the count takes place at the end of October, the winner won’t be formally announced till 1 December.

At the end of December, the current joint general secretaries, Tony Woodley (ex-TGWU) and Derek Simpson (ex-Amicus), step down, and the successful candidate takes over as sole general secretary.
