London CWU Divisional Committee Calls for National Strike Action

According to a report from the National Shop Stewards Network, the London Divisional Committee of the CWU has called unanimously for the Postal Executive Committee to call new strike action when it meets on Tuesday.

This is a positive development. But the CWU shouldn't call strikes on the basis of trying to get management to stick to the Interim Agreement. Rather, they should aim for a wholesale rejection of the framework of the Interim Agreement and push for an ambitious re-mobilisation of the union to use what's left of the pre-Christmas period to win real concessions, and wholesale reversals of Executive Action. Even getting management to stop their attacks (as the Interim Agreement failed to do) would be a good start!

Today's decision by the London Divisional Committee is good. But it doesn't lessen the need for postal workers, reps, and branches to organise a rank-and-file platform within the CWU to take control of the dispute. For those branches that are dissatisfied with the Agreement, local unofficial action is not enough - we need to organise for national action and a national rank-and-file network.
