Loosing Respect

This is my contribution as to why we shouldnt consider joining Respect (in the form of a motion, its not in the royal 'we')

Respect was founded as a political grouping out of the Stop the War
movement. It was from the very beginning a cross-class alliance based on
anti-war and anti-racist sentiments. It has never claimed to be or sought to
be a working class organisation. This is shown by its support by and for
business men in the Muslim community and the lack of an organic link with
the union movement.
Our correct and damning criticisms of Respect in the past were never only
based on the involvement of George Galloway and the MAB, we attacked the
fundamental notion of a popular front. The fact that Galloway and many of
the communialist element's are splitting from respect does not change the
fundamental purpose and nature of the organisation.
Apart from the fact as third camp trotskyists we are fundamentally opposed
to the concept of a popular front, there are more tactical reasons for not
joining respect even on a recruiting binge.
1, A large proportion of the young people we have recruited or have drawn
towards the organisation gravitated to us because they rejected the SWP's
Respect turn. This is especially true of the 'School Students against the
War' comrades. We would lose all credibility with serious young socialists
who have rightly rejected Respect as standing for much that is wrong with
the modern british left.
2, The members of the SWP we have any hope of reaching and recruiting are
not those involved primarily in Respect. Large numbers of their members have
rejected membership of Respect for exactly the reasons we consistently give
in our paper. They are not going to be fooled by us opportunistically
entering Respect.
3, Respect is not a open or very democratic organisation, this has been
shown by the machinations by both sides in the current fight. There is
little hope of us as a small organisation ever wresting any influence within
Respect from the SWP.
4, Our perspectives on Iran, Iraq and Israel/Palestine and much else is
fundamentally opposed to the founding principals of the coalition. If we are
allowed to join Respect our perspectives based on the international working
class will struggle to get a hearing.
5, Respect only exists as a viable organisation in small pockets of the
country. However in large parts of the country we have built up strong links
across the left and local union branches. In places this is through the
L.R.C or we have put up working class candidates under socialist unity
banners. This work will be seriously effected or have to be abandoned if we
join Respect.
6, E.N.S is the only consistently left wing student on the organisation in
the country and has propelled us into the forefront of student politics.
Instead of building ENS as an independent organisation are we going to
jepordise this by relating to the moribund centerist Respect Students.

In short we believe joining Respect would be strategic and tactical error
which could undo the limited but concrete advances we have made in the last
few years.

We can better relate to the left in the SWP (and the rest of the left in
general) if we fight for an open, non sectarian rank and file socialist
unity project with strong links to the unions. This can be brought about
through dialogue with the SWP, CPGB and the "independent" Respect lefties who all see that Respect is a
dead project. We should not dismiss out of hand the calls of other groups
for left unity as we have done in the past but seriously engage in the task
of building a workers party not futile attempts to resuscitate an already
dead popular front.
