Juice On, Juice Off, Whatever

Here's another little gem from the Working Reference Manual review. Apparently, although management accept that the juice has to be off when you open a section switch - after all, you'd fry if it weren't, and that might cost them some money - they reckon it can be left on as you walk to the switch and back.

Huh? Why would turning it off for the full journey there and back mean any less service disruption than turning it off while the switch is opened? And what if you walk to the switch and discover your means of communication is not adequate?

And, er, doesn't the mere fact that the section switch needs opening mean that the service is already disrupted? And don't all Station Supervisors have the right to insist that the juice is off when they go on the track anyway?!

This all adds up to management increasing the risk to staff for no good reason at all.
