It comes as no surprise to anyone to get official confirmation that tomorrow's strike is off.
And you won't hear Tubeworker complaining. It was a dispute that we got into in quite an odd manner, provoked by management [1].
Still, at least the willingness of members of both unions to strike pushed management into backing down and taking a more cautious approach to their latest offensive.
But is that the end of the matter? Certainly not. The immediate problems may be dealt with, but we can be sure that the company will come back with its awful, draconian policies later in the year.
It is essential that the unions learn from mistakes in recent disputes. Firstly, ASLEF's leadership should stop being divisive [2]. Secondly, RMT should not repeat its cock-ups in the stations shorter week campaign [3]. Most importantly, it must keep members informed and involved, rather than disappearing into negotiations for a year, then emerging to announce out of the blue that we need to strike again.
