Emergency meeting against divisive pensions deal

Please attend the emergency meeting on Monday 31st (details below); sign the petition (also below); download it to use it in your workplace; and circulate details of both meeting and petition urgently, as quickly as you can, among public sector trade unionists.

Petition

We should not let the pensions of new workers (including some in the workforce already, though not in the pension scheme, such as student nurses) be cut without a fight.

We call for solidarity with local government and fire service workers. No deal should be signed up to until staff in LGPS and Fire Service have agreed and any pension deal is accepted by all trade unions and service groups involved.

We call on the Unison Health Service Group Executive and the National Union of Teachers Executive to reject the Government-TUC deal on pensions. This deal divides new workers from those already in the pension scheme; and local government and fire service workers from the rest of the public services.

Please send signatures to Kate Ahrens [1].

Emergency meeting

Monday 31 October, 19:30, Lucas Arms, 245A Grays Inn Road, near Kings X.

We are calling this meeting to bring together activists who oppose the Government-TUC agreement to:

  • introduce a two tier workforce into the public sector, dividing existing scheme pension members from future scheme members,

  • leave the pension rights of the existing workforce exposed to future attacks as the numbers of staff without "reserved rights" grow year on year
  • leave fire service and local government workers to fight alone.

We believe that the fight to defend public sector pensions has to be a common fight across the public sector, and has to be linked to the fight of our brothers and sisters in the private sector and for a decent state pension. At the meeting we hope to explore the options for a fight to defend the principle of working class solidarity.

Called by:

Andrew Berry - Islington Unison

Charlie McDonald - PCS

Chris Hickey - PCS

Christine Hulme - PCS

John Moloney - PCS Executive

Patrick Murphy - Leeds NUT

all in personal capacity.
