Tubeworker has reported previously [1] on LUL management's removal of accident books [2] from workplaces.

It turns out that as we confidently predicted, this has caused a watering-down of safety standards, in particular:

• under reporting of accidents as people are reluctant to take the time to get an EIRF filled in, which can involve seeking out a manager and waiting while s/he fills in the EIRF for the accident.

• occasions on which accidents have been reported, but mysteriously, no EIRF has been produced.
• some places still using Accident Books, so two different reporting systems in use.
• union reps not having full access to EIRFs as they would have to Accident Books, therefore not being able to thoroughly investigate causes of accidents.

  So yes, we told you so. But what, we ask, are management going to do about it? As usual, we should think, about as much as the unions and their rank-and-file members can force them to. After all, it's not like management are naturally inclined to put our safety before their comforts.
