Resolution on AWL conference 2008
1. The conference should orient the AWL to operate in the new political situation after the Labour Party rule changes at Bournemouth and the surrender without a fight of the union leaderships to those rule changes. It should set guidelines for building the AWL, especially among students and young people.
A better definition of our orientation to feminist and green agitation and mobilisations will be important in that respect. The conference also needs to take stock of the developing situation in Iraq and of the confrontation between the USA and Iran.
2. The AWL NC on 8 December should commission documents on the following questions:
* Workers' representation and the left after Bournemouth
* Iran and Iraq
* World economy
* Review of the year
* Global warming and intervention in "green" movements
* Third-wave feminism
3. Documents should be short and succinct. They may be backed up by longer background papers
4. The AWL NC should announce to the AWL that the items above are the main ones around which we intend to organise discussion at the conference, and ask that notice of any other broad areas in which members wish to make submissions for conference be given by the AWL NC of late January 2008
5. The first AWL NC discussion on the documents should be at a meeting in January
6. That NC may decide on each document whether (a) to circulate it (with whatever amendments the NC has required) with NC endorsement for general discussion in the AWL; or (b) to circulate it for general discussion in the AWL, but without NC endorsement, and with the possibility of the NC later amending or rewriting it to get a draft which can be endorsed by the NC; or (c) to require further discussion within the NC before any text can be even provisionally finalised for general discussion
7. The second AWL NC discussion on the documents should be at a meeting or or around 1 March. Our aim should have to be all the documents ready, after that NC, for circulation as drafts endorsed by the NC
8. A third AWL NC will be held around 26 April
9. AWL regional pre-conference meetings will be scheduled for the weekend of 8-9 March and for Sunday 20 April. AWL branches will be encouraged to hold additional pre-conference discussions between 20 April and 10-11 May
10. The deadline for any major submissions in areas of discussion other than those scheduled by the AWL NC shall be the date of the NC meeting in early March. The deadline for major amendments and submissions within the scheduled areas of discussion shall be a week before the second round of AWL regional pre-conference meetings. The deadline for minor amendments shall be the date of the last AWL NC meeting before the conference.
