No Hizbullah speaker!
Eve Garrard has circulated the following on the activists' e-list of the lecturers' union UCU (first published here 22/11/07). Our union is affiliated to the Stop the War Coalition, which is holding a conference on December 1st. One of the speakers it has invited to this conference is Ibrahim Mousawi, the editor of al-Manar TV, Hizbullah's broadcasting network.
Al-Manar has circulated rumours that the attack on the World Trade Centre on 9/11 was a Zionist conspiracy, and has also broadcast soap opera episodes showing Jews killing Christian children in order to use their blood for ritual food. That is, it has been responsible for the peddling of very traditional anti-Semitic material which constitutes a direct incitement to racism.
Mousawi is the editor of a big budget, sophisticated, international media corporation, financed partly by the Iranian government, which produces antisemitic material in order to make people hate Jews. Mousawi has himself been reported as saying that Jews are a lesion on the forehead of history. Inviting him over here to speak is not supporting someone to speak for the oppressed, rather it is providing a platform for a purveyor of Jew-hatred to tell us about his views.
What does the UCU think we can learn from this person? Why would anyone value a critique of Zionism known to be based on a hatred of Jews? If the UCU thinks we should be opposing the 'war on terror', does it want to do so by supporting representatives of terrorist organisations whose stated aim is to kill Jews and destroy ?
The UCU should not be associated with the kind of poisonous racism that Al-Manar promulgates, and I would like to know what action it is going to take to dissociate itself from this connection.

Regurgitated neocon lies!
Can we have reliable references to these wild accusations against Al-Manar TV.
Al-Manar is one of the most respected sources of news in the middle-east - polls have shown that even the Israeli public trusts it more than their own news media. Before it was banned in France due to US pressure it actually won first place at a french tv festival for its news reporting back in 2002 beating some 300 other news channels from around the world. It was the first time it had participated in a european event.
What I want to know is why wasn't he invited much earlier, say last year after the attack on Lebanon?
Have a look at the neo-con lies
anti imperialist tv from al Manar TV

Actually, zionist lies
The site you point to is a propaganda site owned by the israeli government. Its director Itamar Marcus is a member of the Israeli government delegation to the Tri-lateral Committee to Monitor Incitement which was set up by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu - you might as well have quoted from MEMRI! I see they also have the "Palestinian Authority celebrates 9-11 terror attacks" and "Hamas TV show abuses animals" stories..
Their specially spliced and edited 30 second clips with their own overlayed translations tell us very little about what the actual programme is about - they also fail to mention that its meant to be a fictional drama series. But back to the point - what has it do to with Al-Manar - even the israeli government website admits that the programme was not produced by al-manar - it was produced by syrian tv and has been shown through out the region.
