RMT Women discuss abortion rights, Feminist Fightback and more

Posted in Janine's blog on ,

At Wednesday's RMT Women's Advisory Committee, we:

  • discussed the RMT Women's Charter . It's a good initative - first suggested by yours truly! - but it needs to become a campaigning tool rather than just an attractive pamphlet. So the Women's Advisory Committee is keen that regions, branches and local reps use the charter to identify issues important to women members and demand action from management.
  • made initial plans for next year's RMT women's conference, and confirmed that the syllabus has been agreed for women's schools at the union's new education centre. RMT women should watch out for details of these in RMT News and at branch meetings.
  • heard an interesting presentation from the Abortion Rights campaign. I have previously blogged my fears that the right wing is winning the argument for cutting time limits, helped by various political parties' keenness to ingratiate themselves to religious leaders. With a Parliamentary attack on the time limit looming on the horizon, it is time to get active for abortion rights. Check out the campaign's website for information.
  • agreed to support the Feminist Fightback conference on Saturday 21st October and encourage both women and men to attend. We'll also be inviting one of the conference organisers to come to our next Committee meeting in December to discuss follow-up campaigning.
  • passed a resolution from Stratford no.1 branch asking the union to demand door-to-door staff taxis to ensure safe travel to and from work (one of the demands in our women's charter) - especially when employers are proposing later running, as London Underground is.

Now this, sisters and brothers, is really quite vile. It's the LifeLeague's Socialist Pro-Choice Challenge. Yes comrades (and yes, they address you as 'comrades'), it's an anti-abortion crusade making a spurious and rather pathetic attempt to suggest that your socialist values should make you oppose women's abortion rights and condemn women to unwanted children or backstreet abortionists.

They want feedback. Give them some.
