Staffing Cuts: some gory details

Here are some examples of where the staffing cuts are hitting hardest. On other stations and groups, the draft new rosters are OK. But it is important that staff know about what is happening elsewhere.

  • Piccadilly Circus loses 2 Supervisors and 2 SAs

  • Embankment: 21 full-time SAs cut to 16; all three part-time SAs lost – local reps believe that there will no longer be enough staff to evacuate the station in an emergency
  • Highbury & Islington loses 2 Supervisors
  • Harrow-on-the-Hill: 11 full-time SAs cut to 8
  • Victoria loses 2 Supervisors, and sees 30 full-time SAs cut to 24, and 10 part-time SAs cut to 5
  • Waterloo: 2 Supervisor posts lost
  • Westminster: 20 full-time SAs cut to 16
  • Canary Wharf loses 4 of its 29 full-time SAs
  • North Greenwich loses 4 of its 17 full-time SAs and both part-timers
  • Paddington and Edgware Road – staffing levels to be cut, even though passenger flow has increased four-fold!
  • Earls Court: 22 full-time SAs reduced to 17
  • Heathrow 123: 15 SAs and 10 CCAs cut to 13 and 8
  • Green Park sees 26 full-time SAs cut to 16; the 10 lost full-time posts are replaced by just 6 part-timers
  • Knightsbridge: 15 SAs reduce to 10
  • Leicester Square: 25 SAs cut to 17
  • Arnos Grove loses double supervisor cover – 8 SS positions cut to 4
  • Cockfosters loses all full-time CSA positions

    Several stations – including Embankment, Piccadilly Circus, Finsbury Park - face the creation of Control Room Assistant posts which staff do not want, and which are seen as an attack on Supervisor positions.

    Several groups face a severe net loss of posts, including: Baker Street (9), Waterloo (9), London Bridge (7), Canary Wharf (17), Stratford (10), Goodge Street (14), Heathrow (9), Acton Town (14), Green Park (13), Arnos Grove (10).

    The Piccadilly line loses 39 positions overall. The Jubilee line also loses 39 posts. Most are on the Extension – obviously not the jewel in the company’s crown that it was five years ago!

    One of the selling points of the deal was that it would increase opportunities for part-time working. Tubeworker welcomes this. The problem is that management’s proposed rosters attack existing part-time staff! Part-time SA posts are to go at many stations, including: Heathrow 123, Acton Town, Tottenham Court Road, Embankment, Arsenal, Cockfosters, Oakwood, Southgate, Cannon Street, North Greenwich and Canary Wharf.

    Management claim that the groups which lose most under these rosters are currently “generously staffed” – passengers and staff would disagree! And even if they are “generously staffed” compared with others, it is only because other stations have even worse staffing levels. We should not be dragged into management’s race to the bottom.

    I assume that the current recruitment campaign for Station Supervisors and Control room assistants is just another of London Undergrounds' cosmetic exercises? Advertising jobs to give the appearance that there are still career opportunities for staff but the realistic prospectics are remote.

    The Supervisor job only appeared in last Fridays traffic circular and has a closing date of Mon 5th Dec.This was apparently online on the Intranet but how common knowledge was that?Some staff don't have computer access at work.There is also the added complication of not being able email the application to your home computer so you can work on it at home.Due to sickness and being off work last week I didn't have the chance to access the application form and being on an incompatiable shift this week it will mean I will probably have to go in and use a work computer in my own time.
    I personally feel that promotion on London Underground is a joke and the recruitment policy is inadequate.The London Underground seems to like employ people who will doff their caps and do as they are told even though they are totally unsuitable for the job.

    As for staff cuts,unless some kind of stand is made,this will be the beginning of the end for London Underground staff.Management are already busy trying to divide and fragment staff and unfortunately they are succeeding in breeding an " I'm alright Jack mentality".

    Some staff are losing faith in the Unions and level one reps are sometimes left floundering in difficult situations seemingly detached from the union machinery that is above them.

    This management doesn't care about us although it purports to.They are only interested in meeting their targets and achieving their bonuses and perks.

    You only have to look at the contempt they hold the Section 12 regulations in and what a distant memory the July bombings have become.We were all "heroes then" but now we seem superluous to requirements.

    It is a matter of standing firm at the moment because this is the biggest threat to date we have had to face.

    I will do my utmost to keep the faith but there are many disillusioned workers out there who need reassuring.
