The National Union of Teachers has set out its plans for its ballot for strike action against the government's plans to cut pensions. The "target" date for a strike is now 26 April.
The schedule runs:
15 March: Notice to employers of intent to ballot
24 March: Ballot opens
11 April: Ballot closes
26 April: Target date of strike action

It is right that the NUT ballots, and sets a date for action as soon as possible. Activists will need to use the short time left this term to push hard for a vote in favour of striking, since the actual ballot takes place across a period when many schools are on holiday. Chasing up ballot-returns is thereby made very difficult, if not impossible, for activists and reps. The pensions-issue is coming to feature as increasingly important in the minds of many teachers. The arguments informing younger teachers that they will be the heaviest losers under the current proposals need to be made in schools this week and next week, along with many reminders to look for the ballot-form in the post and to return it at once.
