WAF was launched in 1989 to challenge the rise of fundamentalism in all religions ... by fundamentalism we do not mean religious observance, which we see as a matter of individual choice. We mean rather modern political movements which use religion as a basis for their attempt to win or consolidate power and extend social control. "
