Stand by for Chaos

Stand by for chaos on London Underground stations tomorrow ... and the next day, next week, and continuing onwards until LUL management sees sense. Yes, the laughably-named 'Fit for the Future' is upon us.

Tomorrow will see stations staffed at skeleton levels, with many staff working at a new location and pretty much all working in a new role. Many at new locations have not been trained in procedures that are peculiar to that station (eg. Platform Edge Doors on the Jubilee line extension); and many are being expected to be familiarised on the day. And, of course, there will be 800 fewer of us.

We can expect things to go wrong. We can not be expected to take the fall for a new way of working that we fought against.

Don't patch up management's failings for them. Don't work at a station you are not familiarised with. Don't carry out any task you are not licensed or competent at. Don't work in an area of a station where there is no place of safety (in many locations, this includes the unpaid side of the gateline, where the ticket office used to be the place of safety). Don't open your station below minimum numbers - even if you are told that someone is "on their way".

If something goes wrong and you have done any of these things, then whose backside do you think will be on the line? Do you think that the goodwill you have shown to management will be reciprocated? We very much doubt it.
