Stop Cleaning Cuts

Posted in Tubeworker's blog on ,

Interserve is planning to slash the number of night cleaners on stations, and to follow this with cuts to day cleaners too.

Under the pretext of an adjustment to its extended contract, the company plans to cut staff numbers, leaving even busy stations with far fewer night cleaners - in some cases, only half of what they have now.

And they plan to deep-clean trains every 21 days instead of the current 16.

This will mean stations and trains not being cleaned properly; some cleaning tasks (eg. washing walls) being transferred to day shifts potentially endangering passengers; and the morning shifts having even more work to do. And it will mean that while some agency staff get direct employment, others will lose their jobs and their livelihoods.

ISS, which has the cleaning contract on the JNP and SSR, also plans cuts as it claims it is in financial trouble. They plan to reduce jobs across the network, and cut cleaners' hours.

This attack is an issue for all of us, and can be stopped if we all unite against it. LUL staff as well as cleaners can make our opposition clear, and through our unions, we can publicise the cleaning cuts, pressure politicians and build for industrial action.
