Queensland wharfies and seafarers say: we'll take a refugee

The Queensland (Australia) branch of the Maritime Union of Australia, representing dock workers (wharfies) and seafarers, has made a public offer to "adopt" a Syrian family displaced by war.

An extended branch executive meeting on 8 September 2015 issued a public challenge to Australia's right-wing, anti-refugee Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, to admit refugees so they can be cared for by trade unionists in Australia.

Other union branches in Australia, and in Britain, should take similar positions.

Abbott's anti-refugee stance outstrips even Cameron's. His policy is actively to turn back, to Indonesia or wherever else they come from, ships full of refugees. Those who reach Australian jurisdiction are then dumped on the Pacific island of Nauru to be "processed".
