Following its executive meeting on 23 May, the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy (CLPD) is campaigning to "draft" Jon Trickett MP to stand for the Labour leadership.

CLPD says it wants a candidate who "is working class... is an active trade unionist... will present the case against austerity..." and will open up democracy within the Labour Party.

Other left-wingers have run campaigns to "draft" left-wing MPs Ian Lavery and John McDonnell, but have so far been unable to push them into declaring a contest.

In the absence of any even slightly left-wing candidate, all the existing nominees are vying to present themselves as "pro-business" and to appeal to right-wing opinion in the labour movement.
