Fare's Fair?

London Underground's new year fare rises have provoked angry reactions from some of the travelling public.

The pre-publicity mentioned only a "moderate 2.5% increase overall" and "help for part-time workers by reducing the daily pay-as-you-go cap to £10.90 (zones 1-6)".

When reality dawned it was quickly realised that some major price-hikes had been slipped in! The poor part-time workers hoping to save money by travelling off-peak found that their pre-pay off-peak daily cap had been increased by 28% (zones 1-6). The day tourists found that their off-peak travelcard (zones 1-6) now costs 35% more. Schools wanting to organise trips for their students discovered that the old group day ticket had been replaced by a new "off-peak group travelcard" involving an increase of 70% per adult and a whopping 122% rise for each child (£4 compared with £1.80 with the group day ticket).

Underground staff, who have to bear the brunt of passengers' anger over these price-hikes, may not be surprised by the subterfuge shown by the bosses in the run-up to these increases. Honesty is often in short supply at the top !
