In the Mood for the Night Tube?

Posted in Tubeworker's blog on ,

LU's 'teaser trailer' about the Night Tube is designed to launch the 'internal countdown' to September 2015. This 'mood film' must be intended to calm our worst fears about how 24 hour working will impact on our working lives.

The 'mood' it conjures up is tranquility and calm. In slow-motion black and white, accompanied by gentle harp music, it shows customers catching their trains. How different
from the reality where drunken revellers will be brawling on platforms, throwing up and giving abuse to staff!

Tubeworker is not against the Night Tube. If it means a better public service for the passengers, then that's a good thing. But we do think that LU needs to take seriously any potential risks of working all night with customers who will nearly all be intoxicated. This video doesn't indicate that LU is in touch with reality enough to be able to do that.

We're also concerned that our working conditions will deteriorate further from fatiguing night work, especially as LU is pressing ahead with job cuts at the same time.

We're not fooled by LU's boast that the Night Tube will support around '2000 permanent jobs' in London. How can LU pretend to care about job creation at the same time as slashing 1000+ from its own books?
