Questions for discussion at AWL introduction to revolutionary socialism school on 19 April

Why the working class? Young workers, class struggle and rebuilding the labour movement
If the working class is a revolutionary force, why is the workers' movement so unrevolutionary? Why are so few young people involved? Is class as important as it used to be? Can the working class overthrow capitalism, or should we look somewhere else?

Socialism, revolution, democracy and violence
Do we need violence to overthrow capitalism? Is that undemocratic? Do we currently live in a democracy, and what is the relationship between socialism, democracy and revolution?

"Radical chains": how does class struggle relate to the fight against women's, black, LGBT and other forms of oppression?
What does Marxism have to say about forms of oppression that aren't based directly on class, for instance the oppression of women? Does addressing issues of oppression mean abandoning the Marxist focus on class struggle? Is it possible to abolish specific forms of oppression without abolishing capitalism?

Marx's ecology: rediscovering a forgotten tradition
Beyond generalities about putting profits before planet, what do socialists have to contribute to ecology? Did Marx want ever-expanding productive forces as the basis of socialism, regardless of the consequences for the environment? Does the fight against climate change mean suspending the class struggle in order to ensure the survival of humanity?

What do "imperialism" and "anti-imperialism" mean?
If we're against imperialism, does that mean backing all those who clash militarily with eg Britain and the US? Is imperialism just something the big Western powers do? Is Iran, for instance, an oppressed nation or a colony of some sort? What do "imperialism" and "anti-imperialism" actually mean?

How (and how not) to fight the BNP
Why is the far right growing in Britain today? Why is it stronger in some working-class areas than the revolutionary left? What can we do to defeat it? Should we seek to unite everyone who says they're against fascism?

Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba: models of 21st century socialism?
Are the governments of Venezuela, Bolivia and Cuba socialist? If not, why not? Is refusal to support these regimes just sectarian pickiness? Does criticising Chavez, Castro etc mean strengthening US imperialism? What are workers in Latin America doing?

Why is the left so divided? How do we get socialist unity?
Why are there so many socialist groups; why are they all so small? Are there any good reasons for these divisions? Are they inevitable? Do we need parties at all? If we want a single, united socialist party, does being in a group now help or hinder that goal? And if it helps, which group should you join?
