Annual General Meeting
Wednesday 19 November at 6.30pm
Friends Meeting House, Euston Road (opposite Euston Station)

Speakers will include John Towersey from Barking & Dagenham Asbestos group, talking about living with mesothelioma; Jim Goss, London Hazards Centre expert on environmental matters speaking about contaminated land and a speaker from the South East Region TUC (SERTUC).

Elections will take place for up to six places on the Management Council to be Directors and Trustees of the charity. Only fully paid up organisations will be eligible to send a delegate, make nominations and vote at this meeting. Nomination forms have been sent to secretaries of affiliates. If you haven't received a form and believe you are a fully paid up affiliate, e-mail: admin@lhc.org.uk.

We are asking member organisations to encourage black, Asian and minority ethnic members to stand, especially if they have been active on health and safety in the community or workplace. We currently have no representation from such members, even though work with BAME communities is to be a main focus of our work for London Councils, and we would greatly appreciate your help in this.

Vacancies at London Hazards Centre

We have now signed the four year funding agreement with London Councils to focus our advice and training on women, black, Asian and ethnic minority communities, and trade unions. We will shortly be recruiting two part-time workers. Details and an application form will be available here shortly.

ASBESTOS MONUMENT

The council agreed to pay for a permanent memorial to all those killed by exposure to asbestos in Barking and Dagenham. It will be a granite fountain with engraving around the foot, in the award winning redevelopment outside Barking Town Hall. It will be close to the arboretum, and will provide a place for relatives to reflect on their loved ones.

A possible date for unveiling is national Mesothelioma Day 27th February 2009.

Migrant and Refugee Worker Support

London Hazard Centre offers advice and support to refugee and migrant workers

Abuse of worker's employment rights (including health & safety rights) by employers is rife for refugees and migrant workers. They often have rates of pay less than the minimum wage and endure long and illegal working hours. Accidents and injuries have always been high amongst this group of workers as the Morecambe Bay and other tragedies have highlighted. The London Hazards Centre makes this sector of our community a priority for our services.
