Workers' Liberty

Small Marxist group with 'a distinctive republican and democratic platform'. Currently in discussions with Workers' Liberty about forming a joint platform in the Socialist Alliance. Small, single-page website.

Dominant, largest group in the Socialist Alliance.

Stands for: working-class unity; federal republic; a broad and inclusive SA with a regular paper, which aims to found a new working-class party. Organised around the Revolutionary Democratic Group (RDG).

Small organisation aiming to 'refound the Communist Party'. Publishes the Weekly Worker. Has worked closely with Workers' Liberty on several issues, having junked much (but not all) of its Stalinist past, and being willing to debate issues.

Marxist group, mainly ex-members of the CWI (Socialist Party). Wants the Socialist Alliance to model itself on the Scottish Socialist Party.

Small group which sees itself in the Trotskyist tradition. Serious disagreements with Workers' Liberty over imperialism: argued for support for Afghan regime against US war.

"The Socialist Alliance Democracy Platform defends the socialist policy of the Socialist Alliance set out in People before Profit, and upholds the principles of inclusivity, openness, tolerance, representation of minorities, transparency and accountability in decision making contained in the SA constitution.

It was because we saw the largest group in the Alliance, the Socialist Workers Party, turning its back on these principles that we found it necessary to form the Democracy Platform in Autumn 2003.
