Iran currency crash sparks protests

Further sanctions imposed by US imperialism and its allies on Iran in December 2011 and July 2012 have aggravated the economic and social problems faced by workers and other exploited layers.

After July’s “chicken crisis” the plummeting currency is now set to cause many other crises as the regime struggles to provide working families with imported food products and many other basic necessities at prices that they can afford.

Support Iranian labour activists

Alireza Asgari and Jalil Mohammadi, labour activists and members of the Coordinating Committee to Help Form Workers’ Organisations, were arrested when Iranian security forces raided the annual general meeting of the Committee on 15 June.

Asgari has now been sentenced to serve a year in prison. Mohammadi, suffering from a deteriorating physical condition sustained during his interrogation, was given a three-year suspended sentence. He must report regularly to authorities.

Urgent Action: Free Iranian labour activists!

Alireza Asgari and Jalil Mohammadi, both labour activists and members of the Coordinating Committee to Help Form Workers' Organisations, were arrested after security forces raided the annual general membership of the Coordinating Committee on 15 June 2012.

In total about 60 labour activists were brutally beaten by the security forces and transferred to Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj.

Iran: support imprisoned labour activists!

On 15 June about 60 labour activists were beaten and arrested during a raid on a house in Taraj by agents of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Intelligence Ministry. It is the latest of a series of attempts by the regime to crack down on independent workers' organisations and highlights the need for solidarity with Iranian workers, both against the clerical-fascist Iranian state and in the event of a war between Western imperialism and Iran.

Iran has a unique theocratic regime. Other states in the region have called themselves Islamic states, but in Iran, uniquely, the clergy is in power.

Iranian worker activist on hunger strike

Mohammed Jarrahi, a member of the Co-ordination Committee for the Formation of Labour Organisations, went on hunger strike on May 16.

Mr. Jarrahi and three of his fellow inmates in the 'methadone wing' of Tabriz Central Prison went on hunger strike 10 days ago to protest against the anti-worker sentences they have been handed down and the terrible conditions of this wing of the jail.
