Hull AWL public meeting: What fascism is and how to fight it

Date:
1 June, 2011 - 21:00 - 23:00
Location:

Wilberforce building, University of Hull

Description:

The British National Party is in disarray and the English Defence League is consumed by infighting. Nonetheless, the far right in Britain is much stronger than it was only a few years ago, and the conditions which allowed it to grow - crisis, cuts, betrayal of the working class by the trade union and Labour leaders - are still present in spades.

Is it right to call the BNP and EDL fascist? What exactly is fascism, from a Marxist point of view, and how do we fight it? Is the strategy pursued by campaigns like Hope Not Hate and Unite Against Fascism, of working for the "broadest possible" anti-fascist "unity", the right one? What is the relationship between anti-fascism and class struggle?
